Abstract

1443011 Binding books GENERAL BINDING CORP 21 June 1973 [22 June 1972] 29580/73 Heading B6A A plurality of sheets 21, magazines, photographs &c. are bound into a book by resting their edges on a heat-activatable adhesive layer 16, e.g. supported on the backbone 11 of a cover, heating the adhesive, moving the sheets relative to the adhesive layer and sliding the sheets relative to one another whilst in contact with the heated adhesive, so as to allow adhesive to contact both the edges and the adjacent sides of each sheet &c., and then cooling the adhesive layer, e.g. on a chill block, Fig. 9 (not shown). The sheets may be manually moved from side to side, Fig. 7, or oscillation of the layer may be effected by the motor 44 of a bookbinding machine, Fig. 11, which is connected via a connecting rod 41 to a heater 33 which supports the cover 10 and adhesive layer, adjustable side walls 50, 51, having spring mounted rollers 62, 63 serving to lightly clamp the sheets &c. in position. These oscillations also jog the sheets into alignment on the layer before it is activated. The motor is activated for a given time, under the control of a sheet sensing limit switch 71. In an alternative embodiment, the heater surface is flexible and is bowed upwardly and downwardly to slide the sheets and move them relative to the layer. The cover, which may be paper or plastics, may have adhesive release strips on the inside so that, when empty, it can be folded flat with one strip contacting the adhesive layer. The layer may be a composition of ethylene vinyl acetate, resin and a wax, and be adhesively or mechanically tacked to the cover, or provided as a separate strip in the form of scrim. Projections or flaps may be provided on the inside of the cover or loose spacers temporarily inserted therein to facilitate location of the sheets on the layer for binding.
