Abstract

1442598 Workpiece transferring WICKMAN MACHINE TOOL SALES Ltd 4 July 1973 [13 July 1972] 32713/72 Heading B3B In a multi-spindle lathe having an indexable spindle drum 13 carrying a plurality of chucks 14 there is provided a loading and unloading arm 16 mounted on a shaft 15 which can be moved axially and angularly by a cam and lever mechanism, a workpiece gripping chuck 18 pivotally mounted on the arm 16 to load and unload workpieces in the spindle chucks 14, and a jaw device (Fig. 3, not shown) attached to a housing 26 on the shaft 15 which acts to turn a workpiece 180 degrees after machining one end to allow the other end to be machined, the said jaw device being attached to a spindle (41) which is rotated by a bevel gear drive in response to rotation of the shaft 15 within the housing 26. The jaw device has hydraulically operated gripping jaws (47), (48). The arm 16 may have two independently movable parts each having two chucks 18 to simultaneously load and unload from adjacent spindle chucks 14 and orientate a workpiece by the jaw device.
