Abstract

1441717 Coating apparatus J A BLACK 1 July 1974 29013/74 Heading B2L Apparatus for applying a coating liquid, such as photosensitive emulsion, to a flexible sheet 16 mounted on a frame 18 comprises a spreader bar 20 which is traversed across the sheet 16 and a traversable positioning device 82 which acts on the side of the sheet remote from the spreader 'bar to position the sheet 16 relative to, and traverses the sheet 16 with, the spreader bar 20. As shown the frame 18 is secured by clips (62) (Fig. 2, not shown) to adjustable support frame members 44, 46 surmounting a curing apparatus 12 and the positioning device 82 is traversed by cables (172) (174) actuated by a motor in the housing 40. The flexible sheet is contacted from below by a roller 96 and wheels 140 of the device 82 and from above by wheels 142, 144 of the spreader bar, the latter being traversed by the device 82 through the agency of magnets 150, 154 mounted on the device 82 and spreader bar 20. The spreader bar 20 comprises an inclined trough 84 with longitudinal slots which can be closed or partially opened by a door 104 carried by members 106 which abut selected steps 128 of adjusters 120; and a spreading bar 131 with teeth 132 which contact the sheet 16 and an adjustable gate member 134 to control the final thickness of the viscous liquid coating medium.
