Abstract

1441641 Dyeing blends of hydrophobic and hydrophilic fibres IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 16 April 1974 [8 May 1973] 21829/73 Heading D1B Blends of hydrophobic and hydrophilic fibres are dyed by applying to the blend by an impregnation process either together or in sequence (1) a disperse dye (2) (a) a polymeric substance containing functional groups capable of reacting with the hydrophilic fibre or with a di- or polyfunctional cross-linking agent during a subsequent fixation process or (b) a di- or poly-functional precursor of a resin which resin may be formed from said precursor in a subsequent fixation process with or without reaction with the fibre, (3) an agent in which the disperse dye exhibits solubility and which has the formula in which m is an integer of 3 or more, R is H C 1 to C 8 alkyl, C 7 to C 15 alkaryl or aralkyl R<SP>2</SP>CO-, R<SP>2</SP>SO 2 - or R<SP>2</SP>OOC-, R<SP>1</SP> is OH, OR<SP>2</SP>, SR<SP>2</SP>, -NR<SP>2</SP>, -OOCR<SP>2</SP>, -NHC 6 H 5 or -NHC 10 H 7 , where R<SP>2</SP> is C 1 to C 8 alkyl, C 5 to C 10 cycloalkyl, C 7 to C 15 aralkyl or alkaryl, C 6 aryl, C 10 aryl of furfuryl, A is ROCH 2 CHOR CH 2 -, CH 2 CHORCH 2 -, -CH 2 'CH-CH 2 -, CH 2 C(CH 2 OR) 3 , -(CH 2 ) 2 C(CH 2 OR) 2 , (-CH 2 ) 3 CCH 2 OR, (-CH 2 ) 4 C 1 -CH 2 (CHOR) y CH 2 OR, -CH 2 (CHOR) y CH 2 , or CH 2 (CHOR) y-z (-CH) 2 CH 2 - where x is the number of unsatisfied valencies in A, Y is 2, 3 or 4 and Z is 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4 but not greater than Y and (4) water, followed by simultaneous heat fixation of the disperse dye and the polmeric substance or resin in or on the fibre blend. Cotton/polyester blends are preferably dyed hot air or contact heating being employed for fixation at 120‹C 230‹C for 15 sees to 5 mins, or alternatively steaming at above 120‹C. Resins employed are melamine formaldehyde and urea formaldehyde, and polyethylene glycol of MW 150, to 1000 being used as disprese dye solvating agent.
