Abstract

1441250 Water jet propulsion DOWTY HYDRAULIC UNITS Ltd 4 Dec 1973 [14 Dec 1972 (2)] 57809/72 and 57810/72 Heading B7V Hydraulic jet propulsion apparatus for water craft comprises a discharge duct 15 projecting through a mounting ring 34 in a vessel transom 23 and receiving the outflow from a motor driven pump 12 having an intake in the underside of the vessel (not shown) the discharge duct 15 being convergent towards its rearward end 24, and the end 34 being circular and disposed in a plane oblique to the axis 25 of the duct 15, the end 24 mating with the forward end 29 of a steering duct 28 aft of the duct 15, with the duet 28 being mounted for the purposes of steering the vessel, for pivoted movement to either side form the position shown about the common axis 30 of the circular ends 24, 29 of the ducts 15, 28. To this end the steering duct 28 is provided with a downwardly projecting lug 70 to which is bolted a bearing sleeve 68 rotatably mounted in a bush 68 carried by an outrigger member 66 projecting rearwardly from and formed integrally with the discharge duct 15, and also the duct 28 is formed with flanges 64 bolted to side portions 60 of a cowl-like cover member 55 mounted for pivotal movement about the axis 30 relative to the discharge duct 15 by means of a bush 58. The cover member 55 is provided with an upstanding pin 52 engaged by a slotted portion 51 of a drive fitting 50 rotatable with a steering shaft 48 mounted in tubular portion 38 of the muonting ring 34, a steering member 49 on the shaft 48 connecting with mechanism in the vessel. A reversing deflector 72 of part-cylindrical form 73 and having side portions 74 mounted on pivot pins 75 on the steering duct 28 is movable under control of a lever 77 from the inoperative position shown between the duct 28 and cover member 55 to an intermediate position 72<SP>1</SP> wherein the vessel is maintained stationary, and further to a fully operative position 7211 wherein water discharged from the duct 28 is deflected to pass forwardly beneath the vessel and the vessel moves in reverse.
