Abstract

1441178 Laminates E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 14 Dec 1973 [15 Dec 1972] 58024/73 Heading B5N [Also in Division B2] A laminated film structure suitable for use in packaging comprises (A) a base layer of a biaxially stretched thermoplastic film of a cellular polymeric matrix prepared from a polymer having a crystallinity of at least 60% by weight at room temperature and selected from homopolymers, copolymers and blends thereof of α-olefins having 2-10 carbon atoms, and having dispersed therein an inert filler having an average particle size of 0À3-8 microns in an amount of 26-50% by weight based on the weight of the polymer and inert filler, the filled polymer having (a) an elongation of at least 1000% at a temperature within the range of above the line drawing temperature and below the melting temperature of the polymer, (b) 30-70% voids, (c) an elongation at break at 22‹ C. of at least 8% in each direction of stretch, (d) 2-40 surface ruptures per square millimetre, (e) a density of 0À3-0À7 g./cc. and (f) an oxygen permeability of 090-10,000,000 cc./100 sq. in./ 24 hrs./atmosphere/mil., and (B) a grease-proof layer, laminated to at least one side of the thermoplastic film base layer, the grease-proof layer being selected from (1) high density polyethylene of density 0À94-0À98 g./cc. at 25‹ C., (2) polypropylene having a crystallinity of at least 60% by weight and (3) ethylene-based ionomeric resin prepared by copolymerizing a mixture of ethylene and unsaturated monocarboxylic acid in the presence of a free radical polymerization initiator and bringing the copolymer into contact with an ionizable compound to effect crosslinking. The film laminate may also include at least one heatsealable layer suitably applied by coating and comprising, by weight (1) 60-70 parts ethylenevinyl acetate copolymer, 20-25 parts of a wax having a melting point of at least 60‹ C., 5-15 parts sodium-amminoum roteinates, 0À5- 5 parts ammonium proteinate, 1-10 parts polymerized rosin ester and 0À5-5 parts metal stearate, (2) 25-99% petroleum wax and 75-1% of a terpolymer of ethylene, a monomeric acid and a vinyl ester, alkyl acrylate or alkyl methacrylate, (3) an ethylene-based ionomeric resin or (4) a low density polyethylene of density 0À91-0À93 g./cc. at 25‹ C. The film laminate may also be coated on one or both sides with a layer of vinylidene chloride copolymer or layer of crystalline polypropylene containing a pigment. Grease-proof layer (B) may be uniaxially or biaxially oriented. The filler in base layer (A) may be inorganic, e.g. silica, calcium carbonate, diatomceous earth, titanium dioxide or clay or organic, e.g. polyesters or polyamides. Layers (A) and (B) may be bonded together with the use of an adhesive, electrical discharge or flame treatment or after extrusion.
