Abstract

1440938 Rolling mills A I WILSON 16 May 1974 [18 May 1973] 23699/73 Heading B3M A roll stand for rod or bar includes a pair of work rolls 24, 25 which are so supported in the stand that their axes each follow a closed path, the rolls being rotated about their axes to pro vide a feeding movement for the rod or bar. Each roll is carried by a pair of pivotal arms 17, 18 which are supported in the stand by an eccentric shaft 15 and coupled to the stand by links 23. Rotation of the shaft causes the roll to follow a generally elliptical path (Fig. 5A) and to contact the work only during a portion of each path. A gear-box (Fig. 2) with an input shaft 30 (and optionally a separate input shaft for driving the rolls ) drives the eccentric shafts and rolls at different speeds. The peripheral speed of the rolls as they contact the work is designed to provide the feeding force. Several stands may be arranged in tandem, with feed rolls and twist guides between them, and the lengths of the links 23 may be increased to ensure that the elliptical paths of the rolls are inclined to the work axis (Fig. 7, not shown). The rolls may have several grooves to provide multistrand rolling, and may each have one or more backing rolls.
