Abstract

1440916 Spring units FLOGATES Ltd 3 Aug 1973 [25 Aug 1972 11 July 1973] 39618/72 Heading F2S [Also in Division F4] A spring unit 42, used to urge a sliding gate plate (32, Fig. 1, not shown) of a valve assembly into sealing contact with a stationary orifice plate (22) at the bottom of a ladle or tundish (10) comprises a core member 50 carrying upper and lower pad members 44, 46, spring means around the core member serving to urge the pad members apart, and a sleeve member 68 freely mounted around the core member between the pad members and dimensioned so that, in the event of failure of the spring means, the sleeve member severely restricts relative movement of the pad members towards each other and correspondingly restricts movement of the sliding gate plate (32) away from the stationary plate (22). As shown, the spring means comprises a first spring assembly comprising a plurality of conical disc springs 74 acting in series between pad member 44 and an annular shoulder 70 on sleeve 68, and a second spring assembly comprising a number of conical disc springs 76 acting in parallel between pad member 46 and a shoulder 72 on sleeve 68. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown) a single disc spring (190) acts between and is in engagement with the sleeve (168) and the lower pad (146) and a coil spring (192) surrounds the sleeve and acts between the disc spring (190) and the upper pad (144). In a further embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown), a coil spring (494) surrounds the core member and the sleeve member surrounds the coil spring, said sleeve member being a helical strip spring with adjacent edges in contact, located between the pad members (444, 446) there being a small gap (482a) between the sleeve member and the upper pad member (444).
