Abstract

1440086 Blast furnaces DES ANCIENS ETABS PAUL WURTH SA 17 Sept 1973 [20 Sept 1972] 43592/73 Heading F4B Between a material storage hopper 4 of a blast furnace charging installation and the furnace throat 1 there is a pivotally mounted sealing flap valve 7 and a material retaining and metering valve 6. The valve 7 is cooled by a continuous flow of gas introduced through pipes 9 and 11 at a pressure higher than the furnace gases. When the valve 7 is open, the cooling gas passes over and cleans the valves sealing surfaces. Charge material fed to the furnace through the hopper 4 (or through a similar hopper 4<SP>1</SP> and valves 6<SP>1</SP> and 7<SP>1</SP>) is distributed by a shoot 2 which is rotatable and tiltable by a drive mechanism (not shown) in a chamber 5. The chamber is cooled by gas supplied through a pipe 10. The cooling gas may be inert gas and/or cleaned and cooled furance gas. The cooling allows the sealing surfaces of the flap valves 7, 7<SP>1</SP> to be provided by commercially available soft or resilient materials. The cooling gas additionally flows around the shoot 2 and keeps some of the blast furnace dust away from there.
