Abstract

1440081 Hose GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO 19 June 1973 [6 Nov 1972] 51099/72 Heading F2P [Also in Divisions D1-D2] A hose includes sheets of helically wound curable elastomer, each sheet being reinforced by an embedded layer of parallel continuous filament cords, equal numbers of sheets being wound in opposite directions about the mandrel during the construction of the hose to ensure balance. The elastomer may be cured by migration of curing or vulcanizing agent from adjacent elastomeric layers of the hose into the reinforced sheets. The sheet material comprises parallel spaced cords made of continuous filament yarn, either untwisted or possessing not more than one-half turn per inch length, embedded in a matrix of curable elastomer, the spacing between the cords being from “ to 4 times the cord width and the matrix being either uniformly thick or having maximum thickness in register with the cords, such uniform thickness being from 0À004 to 0À02 inch greater than the cord thickness. The yarn may be a plurality of polyester or polypropylene filaments. In one embodiment yarns are drawn from reels, passed around grooved guide rollers or through combs, fed through an aqueous natural or synthetic rubber latex bath, extrusion orifices 5, Fig. 2, a coagulation bath and a drier. In the embodiment of Fig. 6 the cord array is passed through latex bath 10, excess latex is removed by doctor blades 24 and the latex coagulated in a dilute acetic acid bath. Alternatively coagulation may be by heat. In another embodiment the cord array is calendered between heated rolls, latex being applied to the heated rolls by transfer rolls to form films which are immediately pressed on to the cords to form an encapsulating matrix.
