Abstract

1439612 Weapon training system SOLARTRON ELECTRONIC GROUP Ltd 24 Oct 1973 [29 July 1972] 35568/72 Addition to 1228143 Heading F3C [Also in Division H4] A weapon training system comprises a source to provide a beam of electro-magnetic radiation, a linkage connected to the source for orienting the source in an orientation related to the orientation of means which is aimed at a target, scanning means for scanning with the beam in relation to said orientation of means which is aimed at a target, a trihedral corner reflector for mounting on a target, and a detector mounted near the source to receive energy from the beam reflected by the corner reflector when the beam is directed at the target. In an embodiment a tank 1, Fig. 1, has a transmitter receiver 2 having a source, a scanning means and a detector 12, Fig. 3, and has a linkage and an indicator (not shown). A target 3, Fig. 1, has a trihedral reflector 4, Fig. 2, which has three plane metal surfaces set mutually at right angles to form eight trihedral corners 5. The source comprises a gallium arsenide laser diode 6, Fig. 3, and a collimating lens 7 which together produce a parallel beam of infra-red radiation. The lens 7 is mounted in an annular mounting 8 which is rotatable in a housing 9. The optic axis 10 of the lens 7 is displaced from the axis of rotation 11 of the mounting 8 within the housing 9. Thus eccentric rotation of the lens 7 imparts a conical scanning motion to the beam from the source. A detector 12 comprises a transducer 13 which is responsive to radiation of the wave length emitted by the laser diode 6, the transducer being located at the focal plane of a telephoto lens system comprising convex lens 14 and concave lens 15 and the transducer being connected to amplifying means (not shown). Radiation from the source incident on the target is reflected by the reflector 4, detected by the detector 12 and amplified signals therefrom are employed to operate means for indicating the accuracy of aim. A pivot 16 and a cam 17 are provided to tilt the source and the detector with respect to a base 18, so that if the base 18 is attached to a gun 19 of the tank 1, the beam of radiation from the source may be depressed by an amount equal to the elevation of the gun so that the beam is directed at the target when the gun is correctly elevated.
