Abstract

1439534 Splicing webs RENGO CO Ltd 5 July 1973 [29 Aug 1972 14 Nov 1972] 32041/73 Heading B8R In a method of splicing the leading end 601, 901, Figs. 5, 7, respectively, of a replacement web roll 62, 92, Figs. 14, 27, respectively, to the trailing end of an expiring web roll 61, 91, whose inner or outer web faces face upwardly or downwardly depending on the requirements of an associated corrugated paper cardboard making machine, the leading end 601, 901 is provided with a double sided adhesive tape 605, 902, and the rolls 62, 92 are accelerated to a peripheral speed corresponding to the speed of the expiring trailing end 611, 911, whereupon the trailing end is contacted by a web pressing roller 41, 42 to press the trailing end directly or indirectly, using an intermediate roller 51, into contact with the replacement roll to attach the trailing end to the leading end. In operation, when the inner face of the leading end of the replacement web roll 61, Fig. 14, is to be attached to the outer face of the trailing end of expiring roll 61, the web roll is driven clockwise by an endless belt drive 21 to bring the peripheral speed of the web roll 62 to the speed of moving web 611, which is then contacted by the driven pressing roller 41 to contact the intermediate roller 51, which is already in driven contact with the periphery of the replacement web roll 62 and having attached to its periphery by means of adhesive tapes 602, Fig. 5, the leading end 601 whose inner face is provided with the double-sided adhesive tape 605 which during further rotation of rollers 41, 51, is applied to the outer face of the trailing end 611. Splicing results in continued supply of web with its outer face facing downwardly. In Fig. 27 the splicing of the leading end of the replacement web roll 92, whose outer face faces downwardly, to the trailing end 911 of the expiring web roll 91 whose outer face faces upwardly, is illustrated. The splicing method is similar to that described with reference to Fig. 14, but the double-sided adhesive tape 902 is provided in the outer face of the leading end 901 and the intermediate roller 52 is dispensed with. The splicing operation is controlled by an electric relay circuit for actuation of relevant splicing operation members including a knife in timed relationship. The web roll support comprises a frame 1 provided on opposite longitudinal sides with respective pairs of arms 141, 142, Fig. 1, which on the one hand are pivotable in the vertical plane, e.g. to bring the intermediate roller 51, 52 to the position indicated in phantom lines for the splicing operation, and on the other hand are movable relative to each other to accommodate between their centres (Fig. 2) the web rolls 61, 62, 91, 92.
