Abstract

1439415 Laminating BORG-WARNER CORP 11 Dec 1973 57405/73 Heading B5N [Also in Division F2] A method of making a flat friction plate assembly, e.g. a clutch plate 26 including a flat backing plate 24 to which a friction material 20 is held by a bonding agent 22, comprises assembling the friction material, the bonding agent and the backing plate, deforming the assembly to a dish shape having the backing plate forming the convex side by clamping in a fixture 30, heating the assembly to cure the bonding agent while the assembly is clamped in the deformed condition, and cooling the assembly in the fixture and releasing the assembly to reform as a flat friction plate assembly. In the embodiment shown, the fixture 30 is composed of a base plate 32 having a concave recess 34 with a relatively flat bottom 35 and tapering edges 36; the upper plate 37 having a protruding portion 38 of frustoconical shape which complements that of the recess. The base plate is secured to the upper plate by bolts 40, springs 42 providing a resilient clamping force. In operation, one or more assemblies are positioned in the fixture with a metallic backing plate, e.g. of aluminium next to the recess and the upper plate clamped to base plate, cooling being effected by ambient air, fans or in a cold room. The friction material may be a woven organic fabric.
