Abstract

1439405 Magnetic printing MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 24 Aug 1973 [28 Aug 1972 13 Aug 1973] 40308/73 Headings B6F and B6C A data recording system comprises a master source document 10 consisting of a homogeneous sheet of particulate permanent magnet material in a flexible binder, the sheet having a coercive force of not less than 1000 oersteds and a maximum energy product of not less than 5Î10<SP>5</SP> gauss-oersteds, the document 10 having a magnetic image recorded thereon which is copied in visual form on to a sheet 30 by bringing the sheet 30 into contact with the document 10 and applying magnetic toner powder 46 to the surface of the sheet 30 facing away from the document 10. The magnetic image may be applied to the document 10 by selectively actuated styli 16, or the document 10 may be in the form of selectable regions of bands (84, Figs. 4-6, not shown). The visual image is fixed at 54, and may be read automatically by an optical or magnetic pick-up device 55. The toner applicator may comprise a non- magnetic drum 34 having an adhesive surface layer to which a thin layer 42 of iron particles adheres, the toner powder 46 being magnetically attracted to the layer 42 by a magnet 48. Excess toner powder is detached by gravity and by a sweeper magnet 50 which also acts to spread the toner powder on the layer 42. A bias magnet 52 reinforces the magnetic fields of the master source document 10.
