Abstract
1439329 Welding UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 8 Aug 1973 [8 Aug 1972] 36884/72 Heading B3R In making a composite body formed of a metal alloy and carbonaceous material, i.e. carbon fibres, graphite fibres, diamonds, diamond abrasive particles or refractory metal carbides, e.g. titanium or tungsten carbide, bonded to the metal alloy, the carbonaceous material is contacted with the molten metal alloy which includes a carbide forming constituent but not in sufficient quantity to allow the alloy to substantially wet or react with the carbonaceous material the alloy is allowed to solidify and then the assembly is heat treated to cause the carbide forming constituent to diffuse through the alloy and form a carbide with the carbonaceous material which bonds the alloy to the carbonaceous material. The carbonaceous material may be incorporated within the metal alloy which latter expression includes a solid solution, a compound, an intermetallic compound or combinations of these forms. Suitable carbide forming constituents are Sc, Ca, Mn, V, Zr, Cr, W, Nb, Ta, Hf and Ti and suitable parent metals of the alloy include copper, copper alloys, aluminium, aluminium alloys, lead, tin, lead-tin alloys, zinc and zinc alloys. The molten alloy is allowed to solidify before the heat treatment is commenced and the alloy is reheated or held at a temperature at which it remains solid. In an example an alloy of copper and 0À001% V or 0À01% Cr is forced under pressure into the interstices of a bundle of carbon fibres. The alloy is allowed to solidify and the assembly is then heat treated to effect diffusion for a few minutes or several hours. The molten alloy may be caused to infiltrate the interstices between loosely backed carbide particles or diamonds to produce a grinding wheel.
