Abstract
1439193 Driving auxiliary apparatus SARGENT INDUSTRIES Inc 9 May 1973 [24 July 1972] 22170/73 Heading B7H [Also in Division F1] A vehicle provided with an auxiliary mechanism having functions independent of the movement of the vehicle, a variable delivery fluid pumping device for operating the auxiliary mechanism, an internal combustion engine for driving the vehicle and for operating the fluid pumping device, means whereby the flow rate of fluid supplied by the pumping device decreases when the pressure of fluid supplied by the pumping device increases and a control device responsive to the power demand of the pumping device when supplying fluid to the auxiliary mechanism for varying the supply of fuel to the engine in accordance with the load demands of the auxiliary mechanism where the engine speed is maintained at a speed near its idling speed. A refuse collection vehicle has an engine 2 of sufficient size to drive a packing mechanism 4 when the engine is running at near to its idling speed. The engine drives a pump 6 through a centrifugal clutch 26 which automatically disengages when the engine exceeds a predetermined speed. Pump 6 supplies, fluid to an hydraulic motor driving packing mechanism 4. As the load on mechanism 4 increases the pressure in output line 10 of pump 6 also increases and this pressure acts on a piston/ cylinder unit 20 and moves throttle control 24 to increase the amount of fuel supplied to the engine. Pump 6 may be a fixed displacement pump or may be a variable displacement swash-plate pump, Fig. 2 (not shown), the volume output of which is decreased as the output pressure increases. Alternatively, two or more fixed displacement pumps connected in parallel may be used, Fig. 3. Pumps 46 and 48, feed through outlet lines 60 and 62 and a valve 50 to a common discharge line 70. A valve 82 is connected to line 70 and opens when the line pressure exceeds a predetermined value, so that a fluid cylinder unit 96 moves valve 50 to the left in Fig. 3, thus short circuiting pump 46, so that only pump 48 is operative. Conduits 88 and 90 lead from the pump unit to a throttle control Fig. 5, consisting of a stepped piston 114, 112 reciprocable in a cylinder 108, 106. Pressure in output line 70 acts through conduit 90 on the end face of the smaller diameter piston portion and the pressure in output line 60 of pump 46 acts through conduit 88 on the step area of the piston. The piston engages rod 116 which is pivotally connected to lever 132, which rotates about fulcrum point 142. Throttle operating cable 144 is attached to lever 132 at one of the points 145, 148, 150, 152 or 154. After an initial movement 127 the piston movement is opposed by spring 121. The fit between piston portion 112 and cylinder 106 is such that fluid flows continuously past the piston to conduit 146 and hence to a reservoir. Throttle movement is limited by stop screw 138.
