Abstract

1439120 Electrolytically colouring anodized aluminium SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO Ltd 17 Oct 1974 [20 Oct 1973] 45124/74 Heading C7B Anodized Al or Al alloy having an anodic oxide coating at least 6Á in thickness is electrolytically coloured by cathodic treatment in an aqueous bath containing a Ni salt and controlled at pH 2À0-5À5. The initial anodizing may be with H 2 SO 4 and/or an aromatic sulphonic acid at 20-30‹C, with a c.d. of 1-5 A/dm<SP>2</SP> using D.C. with superimposed A.C. The obtained coating, unsealed, may be coloured at 10-40‹C at a c.d. of 0À05-3À0 A/dm<SP>2</SP> for 2 sec- 3 min. The colouring bath may contain H 2 SO 4 or H 3 BO 3 to improve conductivity and may contain H 2 SO 4 or Ni (OH) 2 or be treated with an anion exchange resin to control the pH; The Al may be initially cleaned successively in NaOH and HNO 3 . Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1331365
