Abstract
1439028 Alpha-numeric displays and circuits therefor MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC INDUSTRIAL CO Ltd 19 July 1973 [19 July 1972 (2)] 34562/73 Heading G5C Segment electrodes of a display device are connected to the junctions of switches Q 1 . . . Q 7 and resistors R 1 . . . R 7 and the common electrode to the junction of resistors R 1 , R 10 ; the arrangement allows the polarity of the applied voltage across the device to be reversed. An electrophoretic display panel comprises a figure of eight array of electrodes S 1 . . . S 7 and a common electrode C 9 . Another electrode(s), Fig. 1 (not shown), may surround all of the array electrodes. The operating circuit comprises transistors Q 1 . . . Q 7 , Q 9 and resistors R 9 , R 10 . When Q 9 is on, a potential of - E/2 is applied to C 1 and either O or- E to the array electrodes depending on the state of transistors Q 1 . . . Q 7 . A potential may be applied to S 8 to improve the contrast. The input circuitry to the transistors Q 1 . . . Q 7 may include inverters, Fig. 4 (not shown), whereby white figures on a black background or the converse can be obtained. A number of display panels can be combined and each transistor Q 1 . . . Q 7 connected to the corresponding array electrode in each panel and the transistor Q 9 of each panel energized sequentially. Means for erasing the display may be provided by applying the same potential to all array electrodes. Diodes are provided to reduce spurious displays and to increase the impedance of associated circuits thereby increasing the persistance of the display. The display device may comprise gas discharge or liquid crystal devices or L.E.D.s.
