Abstract

1438866 Glass laminates LOCTITE (IRELAND) Ltd 29 May 1973 [29 May 1972] 25520/73 Headings B5N and B5P [Also in Divisions C3 and C2] Surfaces are bonded together with a polymerisable composition comprising a diacyl peroxide of the formula Ar.CO.O 2 CO.Ar wherein each Ar is an optionally substituted aryl radical containing up to 10 carbon atoms, or a silyl peroxide of the formula CH 2 =CH-Si(OOR<SP>1</SP>) 3 wherein each R<SP>1</SP> is a C 1 to C 6 -alkyl radical; and a free radical polymerizable monomer which has the structure of a reaction product of an organic polyisocyanate with a polymerisable ester of acrylic acid or an α-substituted acrylic acid having a hydroxy or a primary or secondary amino group in the alcoholic moiety thereof, and an aryl amine polymerization accelerator of the formula ArNR<SP>8</SP>R<SP>9</SP> wherein Ar is as defined above and each of R<SP>8</SP> and R<SP>9</SP> is a hydrogen atom or a C 1 to C 4 alkyl group. A two-part adhesive composition comprises, in association but separately packaged, a primer portion comprising the peroxide and a polymerizable portion comprising the monomer. In the examples optical adhesive compositions comprise a primer portion containing dibenzoyl peroxide, methylene chloride, vinyl-tris(t-butyl peroxy)- silane, di(chlorobenzoyl)peroxide, di(nitobenzoyl)peroxide and di(dichorobenzoyl)peroxide and a polymerisable portion containing a monomer prepared by reacting 3-hydroxypropyl methacylate with the reaction product of hydrogenated bisphenol A and toluene-2,4- diisocyanate, a monomer prepared by reacting hydroxyethyl methacrylate with the reaction product of polypropylene triol and toluene diisocyanate, acrylic acid, methacryloxy trimethoxy silane, N,N-dimethyl p-toluidine and hydroxypropyl methacrylate. One of a pair of flat glass surfaces is painted with the primer portion and both surfaces are painted with the polymerizable portion. The surfaces are pressed together and the polymerizable portion is allowed to harden by polymerization of the monomers.
