Abstract

1438701 Electro-depositing bright tin, lead or an alloy thereof LEA-RONAL Inc 13 Nov 1973 [17 Nov 1972] 52680/73 Heading C7B An alloy of bright Sn-Pb is electro-deposited from an aqueous acid bath e.g. based on borofluoride, sulphamate or silicofluoride, containing bath-soluble Pb and Su compounds together with (a) an ethylene or propylene oxide condensation product (b) at least one compound of Formula wherein R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , R 4 , R 5 are independently H, halogen, hydroxy, C 1-6 alkyl, (C n H 2n ) COOH (n=0 to 6) or carbamide, or R4 and Rs together form a divalent radical to give a compound of Formula wherein R 6 is absent or OH; and Z is absent, 0 or a quateraizing radical; provided that when Z is absent at least one of R 1 to R 5 is other than H or R6 is OH. Long lists of components (a) and (b) are given, examples being (a) nonyl phenol or lauryl amine condensed with ethylene oxide and (b) α- picolinic acid, and pyridine N-oxide. Other components may include HCHO, Na octyl sulphate or an aromatic aldehyde (list given) e.g. o-hydroxy (or chloro)-benzaldehyde. The bath disclosed contains Sn(BF 4 ) 2 , Pb(BF 4 ) 2 , HBF 4 and H 3 BO 3 and may be operated at 0À5-80ASF. Lead or tin may be singly plated from a bath as above in which (b) is a pyridine or picolinic acid and which also contains an alkyl ether of o-hydroxybenzaldehyde.
