Abstract
A mixture of hydrogen and sulphur dioxide is obtained by the action of steam on a metallic sulphide; and a product consisting mainly of nitrogen and sulphur dioxide is obtained by roasting a metallic sulphide with a limited quantity of air. After removal of the sulphur dioxide in each case by absorption in water or a base, nitrogen and hydrogen remain, which may be mixed and used in the synthesis of ammonia. Iron pyrites is given as an example of the metallic sulphide employed. Any oxygen present in the gases from the roasting process may be eliminated by treatment with the sulphite produced by absorption of the sulphur dioxide in the base, such as lime or ammonia; and when the sulphur dioxide is absorbed in water, it may be recovered.
