Abstract

1438067 Impregnating filaments E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 8 April 1974 [9 April 1973 26 July 1973] 15463/74 Heading B5B [Also in Division D1] Fibres are made from synthetic linear organic polymers having nitrogen linking atoms in the molecular by wet- or dry-spinning a solution of the polymer in a water-miscible solvent. The nascent fibres are then contacted with an aqueous bath in order to remove substantially all of the residual solvent and to swell the fibres so that they contain at least 50 wt. per cent water. In this state the fibres are brought into contact with an aqueous solution of the required impregnant which thus diffuses into the fibres. The fibres are removed and dried, optionally with heating or crimping. The polymers are restricted to those that can only be melt-spun with difficulty by reason of a high melting point or instability. In the Examples (1), poly-(metaphenylene isophthalamide) is formed into fibres by dryspinning and impregnated with tetrakis hydroxymethyl phosphonium chloride fire retardant plus a melamine formaldehyde resin and magnesium or ammonium chloride; (2) poly- (p-phenylene terephthalamide) is wet-spun and impregnated with the same mixed with either metamine formaldehyde resin or quanidine magnesium phosphate hexahydrate or magnesium ammonium phosphate hexahydrate plus the resin; (3) polyoxadiazole is wet-spun and impregnated with the above fire retardant plus melamine formaldehyde resin and ammonium chloride; and (4) poly-(metaphenylene isophthalamide is dry-spun and impregnated with polyethylene laurate. This last prevents the collapse of the structure of the fibres during drying and thus facilitates dyeing. Heating the impregnated fibres (1), (2) and (3) causes the impregnant to cross-link in the fibre.
