Abstract

1437875 Radio guided missiles SAABSCANIA AB 1 Aug 1974 33962/74 Heading H4D When a guided missile is provided with a homing device, e.g. a radar, having a wide lobe RL, Fig. 1, or field or view, wherein the centre line of the lobe tracks the "radar centre of gravity" X, Fig. 2, said centre of gravity can be made to depart from a target M by the introduction (e.g. ejection by the target) of false target indicating means, e.g. chaff RM. The efficacy of such action is reduced by the additional use at the missile of a detector having a narrow lobe DS for detecting an effect only produced by the real target, e.g. an infra-red detector. Thus in the case of Fig. 2. the output of the detector falls and the radar is instructed to stop tracking the false "radar centre of gravity" and reacquire the real target. The search may be aided by the knowledge of the direction of the lobe DS when an output was last produced by the detector. The infra-red detector may be replaced by a second radar, a photodetector or a laser transmitter/receiver, the only requirement being a narrower reception lobe. The homing device may be a television tracker.
