Abstract
1437693 Spray carburetters GENERAL MOTORS CORP 7 March 1974 [21 March 1973] 10259/74 Heading FIB The float chamber 22 of a carburetter with an air-valve 22 which is controlled to maintain a substantially constant pressure in the induction passage 12 downstream thereof has a vent passage 110 which communicates with a fuel vapour storage container 132 or the induction passage under the control of a valve arrangement 120, 150, 140, 146. The valve-operating diaphragm 140 is subject to the suction in the passage 12 through passage 134 and port 136 and when the engine is operative moves the valve disc 150 on to the seat 120 and moves from the seat 146 to vent vapour via openings 159 and the air cleaner (not shown) to the inlet 14 of the passage 12. A passage 162, 164, 170 leading to a port 172 in the passage 12 communicates with the container 132 with the valve disc 150 abutting seat 120 and causes air to be drawn through the container to purge the stored vapour. When the valve 22 is closed the port 172 is upstream of the valve and no vapour may be purged. As valve 22 is opened the suction acting on the port 172 increases until the port is completely downstream of the valve. The valve 22 is connected by a linkage (60, 64, 70), Fig. 1 (not shown), to a fuel metering rod (80) controlling a metering orifice (98). The rod (80) has opposed flats (100), Fig. 3 (not shown), which provide an increasing rod cross-sectional area towards the free end of the rod.
