Abstract
1437658 Blasting SHOWA DENKO KK and KYOEI KENMAZAI CO Ltd 30 July 1974 [9 Aug 1973] 33647/74 Heading B3D A method of blasting comprises supporting an endless belt 4, Fig. 1, by two rollers 2, 3, holding a contact roller 5 against the belt, revolving the belt and contact roller at high speed, and supplying abrasive from a feeder 6 to the point at which the contact roller and endless belt start to contact so that the abrasive is projected from the point at which contact between the contact roller and endless belt terminates on to an object 8 to be treated. In apparatus for carrying out the method, a blasting chamber 1 contains the endless belt 4 which is supported by the fixed roller 2 and the roller 3 which is adjustable by a screw 27 to control tracking of the belt and is acted upon by an air cylinder 20 to control the tension in the belt. The contact roller 5 engages a portion of the belt between the rollers, the angle of contact # 1 between the belt and contact roller being determined by lateral adjustment of the contact roller by a screw 26. An object 8 to be treated is carried by a belt conveyer 7 through the blasting chamber 2. Abrasive from a hopper 11 is directed by a feeder 6 to the point of engagement between the belt 4 and contact roller which are rotated at high speed and carry the abrasive therebetween and project it at an angle # 2 on to the object. Spent abrasive falls through an opening 9 in the chamber on to a sieve so that fine particles are removed and the usable abrasive is carried to a bucket elevator 12 and the hopper 11. In another embodiment, a plate to be blasted is supported on spaced rollers and blasting devices as described above are disposed above and below the plate so that both surfaces may be treated simultaneously. The surfaces of the endless belt 4 and contact roller may be of rubber or abrasive. The peripheral speed of the ball 4 is between 20 and 80 m./sec. and the size of the abrasive particles is from 140 Á to 2 mm. The objects to be treated may be in the form of plates or rods, and in the latter case, a number of devices may be arranged around the path of the rods.
