Abstract

1437341 Cutting tool K KICHLU 14 June 1973 [17 March 1972] 12728/72 Heading B4B A cutter, for cutting strips from sheet material, e.g. leather, plastics, paper or fabrics, comprises a cutting edge 13 in the shape of a helix, the radial spacing between any two adjacent points on the cutting edge and on a radius of the helix being substantially constant. The cutter shown in Fig. 1 is formed by coiling up a flexible cutting blade 12 having a knife edge 13, a spacer 14 being located between the coils; the spacer is formed by cutting a helical cut in a sheet of wood which is then secured to a metal backing plate 16. The space 18 between the coils is filled with a resilient plastics material or rubber 20 which serves to eject the cut strip from the cutter. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), a cylindrical cutting blade (32) together with a pair of helical blades leading away from the cylindrical blade, are all secured to a metal backing plate as in the previous embodiment. In a further embodiment the cutter may be made by forming a helically shaped groove in a flat metal plate, the upstanding helical ridge then being sharpened.
