1436848 Position encoders PENNY & GILES CONDUCTIVE PLASTICS Ltd 17 April 1974 [18 April 1973] 18607/73 Heading H3H The position of a fader or attenuator control 3 is digitally encoded. As shown, a printed circuit attenuator 10 co-operates with wipers 8 whose position is encoded in binary Gray code by wipers 9 co-operating with a printed circuit code board 11. Wiper 9<SP>1</SP> receives supply voltage from a continuous track, the coded output is taken from end terminals 14. Alternatively, the attenuator and encoder may be on the same board or the coded position signals may control an attenuator or the gain of an amplifier. Optical or magnetic encoders may be used. The digital signals may be recorded and used to control the position of the fader during playback, while permitting manual override.
