Tunnel kilns; air and gases, supplying.-In a tunnel kiln for burning bricks, annealing metal, &c., the heating or firing chamber is heated by hot air from hot-blast stoves externally arranged, and such air is additionally heated at desired points along the kiln by passing over combustion chambers 29 &c. within the chamber 6, or over electric heaters arranged in certain of the interior flues. The hot-blast stoves are heated by gas burnt in combustion chambers 12, and they are worked in pairs, one pair, say 10, 11, being heated while the other pair is supplying hot air past the reversing- valves 23 to flues 21 delivering partly at the bottom of the chamber 6 behind the combustion chambers 29, 29<a>, 30, 30<a> (which are all independently gasfired) and partly at the top of the chamber 6 through ports 32. The hot gases from the combustion chambers 29 &c. may be led away by the flues 28, 24 to assist in heating the pair of stoves for the time being '' on gas. " Where electric heaters, e.g. resistances, are used, they are placed in upward extensions of the flues 21, which are then arranged at a lower level than that shown in Fig. 4. The resistances may be automatically controlled by the movements of the trucks. Moisture or any desired gas is introduced at 43 to the flue 21, and air &c. is withdrawn from the kiln by a pump 41 connected to a longitudinal flue 40.
