Abstract

1435827 Storage-stable UF condensates BASF AG 5 Oct 1973 [7 Oct 1972] 46623/73 Heading C3R A storage-stable urea-formaldehyde resin is obtained by condensing urea or a methylolated urea or a water-soluble urea-formaldehyde condensate with formaldehyde in an overall molar ratio of urea : formaldehyde of 1 : 3-10 in aqueous solution at a pH of 0-3, then adjusting the pH to 6-10 and adding urea at 20-80‹ C. to a final urea : formaldehyde ratio 1 : 1À5-2À5. It is used with a latent acid catalyst and optional conventional additives in an aqueous bath for finishing cellulosic textiles. In Examples 1-4 in the first stage urea solution is added to 40% formalin acidified with H 2 SO 4 or a 60% solution of a UF condensate of U : F ratio 1 : 4 or a mixture of a resin of U : F ratio 1 : 1À6 and formalin is acidified with H 2 SO 4 at 90-100‹ C.; these solutions are adjusted to pH 6À8-7À4, urea or urea solution is added, and they are heated at 40-50‹ C. for 4 hours. Baths containing 120 or 200 g.p.l. of resin and 3 g. NH 4 Cl or 9 g. Zn(SO 3 ) 2 are made up and used to treat cotton or rayon fabrics.
