Abstract

1435677 Antiskid braking systems DBA SA 5 June 1974 [29 June 1973] 24980/74 Heading F2F In an antiskid braking method the angular speed of at least one wheel is monitored by a sensor 60, the information obtained is fed to an electronic control unit 62 to generate an output signal resulting from a pre-established condition representing a risk of wheel lock and a valve assembly 24 is operated by means of the signal the assembly comprising a valve controlling flow between pressure source and a set of actuators and means for reducing braking pressure, the set of actuators being mounted on a single axle and the supply thereto being cut upon receipt of said signal until the brakes are released and the pressure in the actuators is reduced in successive steps, each change of step resulting from the detection of a subsequent risk of skidding of the monitored wheel. The speed of pressure reduction in the actuators as varied as a function of the pressure prevailing and as a function of the instantaneous deceleration of a monitored wheel. A master cylinder 10 has one outlet connected to the front brakes and the other to the rear brakes via valve assembly 24 which includes an inlet orifice 28 an outlet orifice 30 and a discharge orifice 32 connected to the reservoir 34 of the master cylinder, the orifice 28 being connected to orifice 30 via an isolation valve having its ball closure member 36 normally biased off its seat 37 by a spring 38. Grooves 39 permit unretarded flow around the ball. Orifice 30 is connected to orifice 32 by way of a relief solenoid valve 40 of which the closure member 42 is normally biased on to its seat 41 by a spring 44, seats 37 and 44 being in alignment. A constriction 50 situated between valve outlet 48 and orifice 32 is arranged in parallel with a by-pass duct 52 controlled by a valve 54 held in its closed position by a piston 56 exposed to the pressure prevailing in the rear brake actuators 14 and counteracting a spring 58. Signals from sensor 60 are fed to control' unit 62 which controls energization of the valve 40. If the vehicle has a plurality of speed sensors the signal selected is that of the slowest wheel.
