Abstract

143,544. Andrews, L. A. Oct. 26, 1914, [Convention date]. Portable hand pumps.-To maintain in operative condition the piston washer of air-pumps which are particularly suitable for inflating tyres, the washer is expanded at the end of each stroke to a diameter greater than that of the pump barrel. Thus, an enlarged space 2, Fig. 1, is provided into which the piston washer 3 enters as it passes over the expander 5. In the case of a double-acting pump, an enlargement with expander is provided at both ends of the barrel. Fig. 3 shows a doublebarrelled pump in which each piston is expanded in the enlarged end of its barrel. The stuffing- box is packed by the rubber double-cone 32 which is compressed by a screw cap 31.
