Abstract

1435019 Seaming non-metallic sheet material C F STICKLER 23 Oct 1973 [20 July 1973] 49306/73 Heading B5K [Also in Division F2] A thermoplastic member 12 having an outer surface of circular cross sectional shape is friction welded to a thermoplastic member 14 having a bore of circular cross-sectional shape to receive the member 12 with an interference fit by gripping the member 12 to restrain it against rotation, rotating the member 14, advancing the member 14 towards the member 12 to selected telescopic relation therewith whilst the member 14 rotates at a speed sufficient to generate friction and soften the interfitting surface portions of the members 12, 14, and stopping the rotation when the selected telescopic relation is reached to accommodate cooling and bonding of the friction heated interfitting surface portions of the members 12, 14. As shown in Fig. 2, the member 12 comprises a plumbing tube of thermoplastic material, e.g. polybutylene, polyethylene or polyvinyl chloride, and is encircled by oppositely facing slip nuts 16 to engage enlarged end portions 14, when these are friction welded to the tube 12, to urge these into sealing abutment with a conduit (18), Fig. 10 (not shown). Each portion 14 has tapered parts 20, 26 and a circumferential rib 22 and, preferably, is made of the same material as the tube 12. Preferably, the diameter of the bore of the portion 14 is 0À002- 0À008 inches less than the outer diameter of the tube 12. The nuts 16 may be made of metal or an ethylcellulose thermoplastic material. Friction welding apparatus, Figs. 4 and 5, comprises a clamp 40 for clamping one or more tubes 12 between jaws 44, 54 having tubereceiving grooves 46, 56, the jaw 44 being fixed and the jaw 54 being mounted on a member 50 slidable on an upright 48 by a handle 52. Rotation of a portion 14 is effected by a handheld power tool 60 having a drive shaft 62, Fig. 6, to which a shank 64 of a chuck is removably secured. The shank 64 terminates in clamping jaws 70 shaped to receive the part 26 and, preferably, the rib 22 of a portion 14. A nut 76 is advanceable along the shank 64 to close the jaws 70 to clamp a portion 14. A guide pin 84 extends coaxially of the jaws 70. In use, at least one tube 12 is held by the clamp 40 with the end(s) thereof projecting. A portion 14 is inserted in the chuck of the spinning tool and clamped by the jaws 70. The tool is rotated at 2,000-2,500 r.p.m. and, simultaneously, either the portion 14 or the tube 12 is advanced towards the other so that the pin 84 enters the open end of the tube 12 and the part 20 of the portion 14 engages the end of the tube 12 telescopically with an interference fit. Endwise movement of the tube 12 and the portion 14 is terminated when the tube end abuts an enlarged stop (88), Fig. 9 (not shown), of the pin 84. Rotation of the tool 60 is stopped and the jaws 70 released to allow cooling and setting.
