Abstract

1434996 Irradiation apparatus; arcplasma heating UNION CARBIDE CORP 25 June 1973 [26 June 1972] 30021/73 Headings H5R and H5H Apparatus for the in-line radiation treatment of a moving product P includes a treating chamber 12 housing at least one radiation source, e.g. a plasma are or a mercury ultraviolet lamp, and forming a continuous enclosure with inlet and outlet tunnels 16 and 24 of uniform cross-section, and a gas injector channel 18 which is located a distance of at least 10 times the smallest cross-sectional dimension of the tunnel from the inlet end of the tunnel, and the open end of which channel has a length which is at least equal to the width of the product P and is oriented parallel to the width of the tunnel, the other end of the injector tunnel communicating with a plenum chamber 20 provided with a source for the continuous introduction of an inert gas. The height of the channel 18 should be at least four times its width (Fig. 2, not shown) and-depending on the shape of the product to be treated-the tunnels and treating chamber may be of rectangular, cylindrical (Fig. 5b, not shown), or triangular (Fig. 5a, not shown) cross-section and the bottom of the tunnel may include radiation reflecting sections. When the product is in the form of a continuous web it may itself constitute the bottom surface of the enclosure. The apparatus may include provision for raising the top and walls of the enclosure by an adjustable amount above the conveyer upon which the product is moved, to permit the treatment of different products, and automatically to raise them to a predetermined height and simultaneously screen off the radiation source when an irregular or warped product surface, which is not to be treated, passes through. Nitrogen is referred to as the inert gas, and numerical data are given.
