Side-car attachments; tricycles.-A braking- device is applied to vertical shafts such as those carrying the trailing or independent wheels of cycles, tricycles, trailers, &c. in order to prevent excessive angular swing of the wheel should it leave the ground on striking an obstacle. and the consequent strain involved on retouching the ground in wrenching the wheel back into line with the leading or steering wheel. The shaft a carrying the forks of the trailing wheel is mounted to slide and rotate in a bearing-lug b on a bracket c secured to the box or body d. Secured to the lug b by means of screws is a casing e containing one or more disks f which are free to slide relatively to the shaft a, but are constrained to rotate with it by the engagement of a projection g in a key-way h cut in the shaft. One or more other disks i are slidingly secured to the casing e by screws k engaging recesses j in the disks, and are forced into frictional contact with the disks f by a spring l the pressure of which is adjusted by a screwed cap m.
