Abstract

1434930 Isostatic pressing of metal powders PROGRESSIVE RESEARCH SERVICES Ltd 12 Oct 1973 [13 Oct 1972] 47443/72 Heading C7D Metallic powders e.g. steel or Ni are cold pressed at up to 35t.s.i. to form green compacts which are then coated with a layer of a deformable material such as plastics, rubber, or metal prior to cold isostatic compaction by immersion in a fluid and then sintering. The powder is pressed at 25-35 t.s.i. to a density # 50% theoretical and coated by spraying, dipping or fluidized bed with at least one of P.T.F.E., Al, Zn, Cu, Cu-Ni, woods metal or Rose's metal. The coated compacts are isostatically presssed cold at 50-120 t.s.i. in open cage 8 in a pressure chamber filled with a pressure liquid 9 such as water, oil or silicone liquid. Pressure may be generated by hydraulic or screw press or by explosions generated by electrical evaporation of a wire or wires immersed in the fluid.
