Abstract

1434653 Feeding sheets LICENTIA PATENT - VERWALTUNGS - GmbH 2 July 1973 [31 July 1972] 31350/73 Heading B8R To regularize the arrival of sheets at the outlet 5 of a conveyer system the separator 1 is arranged to forward the sheets selectively into an empty one of a plurality of channels (3 and 4) and retractable stops (50 and 51) in the channels are arranged to release the sheets to provide a regular spacing between then at the outlet. A photo-cell 60, 61 is associated with each channel and is connected to a control circuit which actuates a deflector 2 to direct an oncoming sheet to an empty channel. If both channels are full the separator 1 is disabled by cutting off the suction to trough 24 by means of electromagnetic valve 28. The control circuit may be set to raise stops 50 and 51 in a sequence to provide an even flow of sheets or may be set to present a single sheet at the outlet 5 in response to an external call-up signal. If the external "callup" signals are infrequent the sheets are taken from a single channel. Suction devices 25 prevent separation of more than one sheet. In an alternative form (Fig. 5, not shown) there are three conveying channels to which sheets are selectively directed by two deflectors (10 and 11). A control circuit directs separated sheets to empty channels and operates the strips (106, 107 and 108) in sequence to provide an evenly spaced succession of sheets at the outlet. To prevent "double feed" a second suction separator having a vacuum chamber 82, Fig. 3, may follow the first. A "double sheet" is bolted by a stop 85 whilst the set of suction apertures in belt 80 which caused separation of the "double sheet" passes around detour roller 86. Arrival of these apertures at the chamber 82 and retraction of stop 85 separates the topmost sheet from the "double". A photo-cell 88 is effective to prevent further separation if a sheet is present at the stop 85 during the interval where no sheet should be present. In a further embodiment, Fig. 8, a single suction belt 207 cooperates with two vacuum chambers 204 and 205 to provide separation from two piles. The separated sheets are directed by deflectors 230 to an empty one of three conveying channels 16, 17 and 18 where their further progress is controlled by stops 232, 233 and 234 as before. The sheet stops may be associated with acceleration rollers, e.g. 52 and 53, Fig. 1, which press the conveyer belts against the sheet as the stop is retracted.
