Abstract

1434477 Cooling rolled stock E J SCHAMING 7 May 1974 [15 Aug 1973 8 Feb 1974] 20143/74 Heading B3M [Also in Division B2] A liquid distribution apparatus, suitable for cooling metal strip issuing from a rolling mill, or for delivering a coating material or lubricant to a moving web, includes a coolant header in which coolant discharge units are removably fitted, each unit being provided with a supply of pressurized control fluid to control the discharge of coolant from the unit in response to demand. Headers 20 and 21, Fig. 1, may be disposed on either side of a rolled strip 22 and discharge liquid coolant on to the strip. The flow of coolant from the individual units is controlled according to the sensed temperature or flatness of the strip and is distributed on the strip to produce a strip free of buckles or twisting. Each unit 23, Fig. 3; is removably fitted into a bore in a header, and is supplied with compressed air to control the coolant flow through the unit. A hollow body portion 36 extends into the header and houses a valve 51 for controlling the flow between coolant inlets 50 and a spray nozzle 73. The valve is movable axially, against spring pressure, by admitting compressed air to a conduit 46, thereby allowing coolant to flow past a seating 58 to the nozzle. A head 23 having two nozzles may be used if desired. An alternative unit 97, Fig. 11, is not screwed into a bore in the header, but bolted in place by bolts 110. It incorporates a similar valve 123, but has a head portion 107 which is dovetailed to the remainder of the head. The (or both) spray heads 136, are located in the portion 107 by eccentric bases 135 to ensure that the heads are oriented in a desired direction.
