Abstract

1434406 Iron oxide briquettes THYSSEN (GREAT BRITAIN) Ltd 9 Dec 1974 [10 Sept 1973] 42435/73 Heading C1A [Also in Division C7] A briquette for charging to a blast furnace comprises finely divided iron oxide, powdered coal or coal dust (coal with less than 8% volatile material) or powdered coke or coke dust, 1À25- 2À75% by wt. carbon black (in suspension in water), 2À5-4% by wt. of a thermosetting binding resin and optionally 0À5-1À5% starch. The oxide may be fume dust, (e.g. BF dust) flue dust (e.g. LD dust) rust or mill scale. The resin may be phenylformaldehyde resin, melamine, a furan resin, a furfural alcohol resin, or a urea-based or aniline-based resin. The coal, if used, is preferably anthracite. The moulded briquette may be fed directly to a blast furnace, but preferably it is pre-heated to cure the resin. In the furnace, the resin is carbonized and the carbon black combines with the carbonized resin to form a carbon lattice having a high strength.
