Abstract

1433300 Winding transfer-tails E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 6 Sept 1974 [7 Sept 1973] 39013/74 Heading D1J An apparatus for winding a transfer tail on each of two coaxial yarn tubes 8 arranged in end-to-end relationship comprises a fixed yarn guide 1 for each yarn 2, 3; a first-threading yarn traverse guide 26 for each tube 8, a yarn cutting device 9 in proximal alignment with the vertical plane between the tubes 8 and disposed beyond the tubes 8 from the fixed guide 1; and a pair of retractable yarn guides 4 positioned between the guides 1 and the traverse guides 26, the guides 26 being retractable away from the tubes 8. In operation the yarn guide 4 is moved by a cylinder 5 to project over a drive roll 6. The two yarns 2, 3 are then inserted in the yarn guide 4, wrapped 1¢ times around the tubes 8 to form a wrap 17 and then converged through the cutting device 9 into a sucker gun 22. As soon as the yarns 2, 3 are in the gun 22 the operator moves a valve 11 to cause cylinder 18 to operate the cutter 9 and cylinder 5 to cause the yarn guide 4 to retract. The out yarn ends are trapped by the wrap 17 to cause wind-up to commence and when the yarns eventually escape from the guide 4 the pins 1 cause the yarns to move towards, and to be picked up by, the traverse guides 26. As the yarns move away from the tail winding position they describe a helical path along the tubes 8 to form transfer tails. In Fig. 3 the guide 4' has inwardly inclined surfaces 4a which, when the guide retracts, forces the yarn wraps 24 to move towards the abutting ends of the tubes 8 and so cross over the cut ends to trap them securely. Two additional thread lines 13, 14 are held temporarily in a fixed guide 12 positioned beyond the end of drive roll 6 for later attachment to abutting yarn tubes on a second chuck 20. The running yarns are held in sucker gun 22 which carries them to a waste bin during string up. It may be preferable to string up the tubes on chuck 20 before those on chuck 7, depending upon the particular combination of machine elements. For Figures see next column
