Abstract

1433271 Strap tensioning tool AMP Inc 9 May 1974 [7 June 1973] 20456/74 Heading F2G A tool for tensioning, and optionally trimming, a flexible strap, positioned around a bundle of -wires, comprises a sliding gripper assembly which operates to tension the strap until a predetermined tension is reached when the gripper releases, and if desired severs, the strap according to the positioning of an externally visible selector. The gripper assembly 30 comprises an elongate drawbar 62, mounted for sliding, reciprocating movement, to which is attached the sprung gripper 72 such that when the operating lever 28 is not depressed the spring 48 maintains the grip in a first position at the nose portion of the casing, a cammed surface of the gripper co-operating with surface 78 to rotate the gripper into a non- gripping position. As the operating lever 28 is depressed the gripper spring presses the gripper against the strap 136, and the drawbar 62, guided by shoulder 64 of casing and pin 68 in slot 70 of the drawbar, slides away from the nose, being coupled to the operating lever through tension release lever 38, until the shoulder 98 of tension release lever 38 hits the stop 96 which is integral with the casing whereupon the lever 28 is released and the mechanism returns to its original position under the action of spring 100. This procedure is repeated until the tension in the strap is sufficient to overcome the force exerted by spring 48, which is preset by adjustment of screw member 54, maintaining roller 90 in grooves 88 in drawbar 62 lifting roller 90 out of groove 88. If the selector 122 is in a "no-cut" position the drawbar is still limited by the pin 122 to a travel such that shoulder 98 hits stop 96 and the strap is released but if selector 122 is in a "yes-cut" position the roller 90 is allowed to traverse slit 86 in drawbar 62 such that surface 98 misses stop 96 so that a cam surface 110 of the upper part of lever 28 now contacts roller 108 rotating a lever 104, pivoted at pin 106 attached to the casing, such that the blade 116, attached to the other end of lever 104, co-operates with anvil 117 to sever the strap.
