Abstract

1432895 Driver circuit INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 22 Feb 1974 [16 March 1973] 8070/74 Heading H3T A driver circuit with an inductive load 10, e.g. for use in a print and punch actuator of a computer system, comprises a series connection of a first switch T 1 , an inductive load 10 and a second switch between a pair of supply terminals, an auxiliary circuit D 1 , D 2 coupled to the load 10 and an arrangement 20-30 for controlling the operation of switches T 1 , T 2 so that if the switches T 1 , T 2 are closed current flows through the load and if the switch Ti is subsequently opened, current through the load decays relatively slowly and if the second switch T 2 is subsequently opened, the load current decays relatively quickly. In operation, an input control pulse at 15 turns on T 1 via a single shot device 25 and a predriver 36 and T 2 turns on simultaneously via a predriver 20 so that current in coil 10 builds up. T 1 turns off at the end of the single shot period so that the coil current decays slowly via the now-conducting diode D 1 . T 2 turns off at the end of the input control pulse as to render a diode D 2 conducting and the current in coil 10 is reversed and decays quickly via D 2 . The current in coil 10 can be maintained over a long period by multiple single slot devices or delay circuits or by adding an inductance in series with the coil.
