Abstract

1432839 Bookbinding CARTIERE PAOLO PIGNA SpA 24 May 1973 [26 May 1972] 24877/73 Heading B6A In an apparatus for binding perforated sheets at a binding station using a ring-type binding strip cut from wire a band 2, means 4 are provided for counting the "C" loops in the band as it is fed from a reel by an unwinding device 3, and when the number of loops equals that set in an adjustable selector, the strip is cut from the band, inserted into the perforations in a manually loaded block of sheets and the loops are closed by press elements 7, 7a, means, e.g. a microswitch 21, also being provided to control the feeding of the next strip when the block of sheets has been removed from the binding station. The supply of band from the unwinding device 3 is controlled by sensors 16, 16a, 16b, the band being fed into the apparatus by a toothed belt 9. A photoelectric sensor counts slots in a drive pulley 10 for the belt and when the desired number of loops has been so counted, the strip is cut at 6 from the band and is fed on to the binding station which has shelves 8, 8a and slidable stops 18, 18a for positioning a block of sheets, the microswitch 21 controlling the feed. A footswitch 22 or the microswitch 21 causes the press elements 7, 7a to clamp the loops and effect the binding, the element 7a moving through a greater distance than element 7. Movable walls 20, (20a), Fig. 4, (not shown) may be provided to guide the loops during the pressing operation. If a binding comprising two spaced binder strips is required for a particular block of sheets, the first binder is cut at 6, moved past the pulley 10, and then rollers 12 are moved downwards, as seen on Fig. 2, by a lever 14 and pneumatic cylinder 15 thus allowing the belt segment between idler pulleys 11, 11d to move relatively faster than the remainder of the belt to space the binder strips.
