Abstract

1432794 Automatic circuit breakers V Y GUSCHIN 30 May 1973 25764/73 Heading H1N A circuit breaker that opens immediately with a high overload current and also after a time delay with a persistent lesser overload current has: a tripping rod 16 engaged by a latch 14 that, when engaged, prevents a contact opening mechanism 9, 10, 11, 13 from operating; a tripping device 23, 24 (e.g. incorporating a time delay) that can move the tripping rod to release latch 14, which can then rotate and release the contact opening mechanism; electrodynamic means 4, 5, 6, 7 that increases pressure between contacts 2, 3, when closed, in response to current flow through the contacts; the latch 14 being linearly movable against a bias 19 in response to the pressure between the contacts in a direction to release the latch from tripping rod 16, whereby on a current through contacts 2, 3 exceeding a particular value, latch 14 disengages from tripping rod 16 and permits the contact operating mechanism to operate. The contacts may be separated by manual operation of lever 12. Small persistent overload current after a time delay causes device 23 via rod 24 to rotate tripping rod 16 and thus release latch 14 which is then free to rotate under the bias of spring 13 to release lever 11 of the contact opening toggle mechanism 9, 10, 11, 13. Current flowing through contacts 2, 3 also flows through windings 5, 6, so arranged with respect to contact carrying winding 6 pivoted at 7 that an upward force is provided, thus increasing contact pressure. This force is transmitted via linkage 9, 10 and lever 11 to pivot shaft 18 of latch 14. Upward movement of shaft 18 in slots 17 is resisted by spring 19. A particular (high) value of overload current lifts the assembly against the bias of spring 19 such that latch 14 is no longer restrained by tripping rod 16. Latch 14 is thus free to rotate and release the contact opening toggle mechanism. The value of overload current which lifts latch 14 out of engagement with tripping rod 16 is adjustable by means of screw 20 which alters the tension in spring 19. Stop 22 prevents rotation of rod 16 as latch 14 is lifted; this rotation would otherwise prevent release of latch 14.
