Abstract

1432744 Building motions SOUTHERN MACHINERY CO 6 March 1974 10008/74 Heading D1D A ring rail lowering mechanism comprises a mechanical clutch 44 mounted on a fixed part of the machine frame and having an input rotary shaft driven by a constantly rotating part of the machine frame, the clutch output shaft carrying a pulley 52 having a flexible element 68 windable thereon to lower the ring rail. The clutch includes a rotary component 54 turnable in one direction to disengage the clutch, an operating linkage 55-67 connected to the rotary component 54 and via spring means 64 biasing it in a direction to engage the clutch to lower the ring rail. A releasable locking means 95, 102 is provided to hold the linkage with the clutch disengaged and the clutch output shaft stationary during rotation of the clutch input shaft. As shown, the ring rail 25 is reciprocated during formation of the packages by building motion 31 acting via flexible elements 32 and counter-balanced rail lifters 27. As the ring rail approaches the top of its penultimate stroke a latch release finger 85 contacts a clutch operating linkage 95 to free a clutch trip (81 Figs. 2 and 3 not shown) which, on the final upward stroke, operates the clutch to wind the ring rail to a lower doffing position. Clutch actuating devices (Figs. 2 and 5) The ring rail 25 carries a latch which is released as the ring rail reaches the top of its penultimate stroke by contact of the catch (85) against the clutch linkage 95. A clutch trip 81. thereby is pivoted into the path of the clutch operating linkage so that on the final upward stroke the clutch is actuated. The latch is reset as the ring rail reaches its lowermost doffing position and arm 91 engages stop 105. Clutch operating linkage (Figs. 3 and 3A) The clutch trip 81 releases the linkage arm 95 from its stop and a coil spring 64 attached to the other end of the linkage moves the clutch tab part 54 to engage the clutch. Clutch (Fig. 4) Movement of the clutch tab 54 engages the ball and cam track section (46'). The clutch
