Abstract

1432569 Doffing yarn packages; two-for-one twisters; counting JAMES MACKIE & SONS Ltd 17 April 1973 [5 May 1972] 21176/72 Headings D1D, D1F and D1J A yarn or tape twisting and winding apparatus comprises in combination a two-for-one twister 4-26, Fig. 1, means 30 feeding the twisted yarn or tape to a winding head 40, means 72 for automatically doffing full packages from a winding spindle 46, and means 102 to engage a length of yarn or tape extending between a doffed package and the winding head 40 and movable so as to present the length of tape or yarn to a yarn gripper 68. The lower haul pulley 30 drives a counter 62 and a generator 63. When a predetermined yardage has been wound the counter 62 stops the motor driving the twister 4-26 and the hand pulleys 30. This stops the generator 63 and causes a signal detector to stop a motor driving the winding spindle 46. Thereafter, automatically, a doffing arm 72 moves the fully wound package axially off the spindle 46. The yarn that trails behind the doffed package extends between a pair of arms 96, 98 and over a bracket 102. The arms 96, 98 then commence to close and this causes the bracket 102 to swing upwardly in a manner presenting the trailing yarn or tape to a slot 68 in the end of the spindle 46. After the arms 96, 98 have closed on the yarn or tape they swing jointly anti-clockwise as viewed in Fig. 1 to draw the yarn or tape across and into the slot 68. An electrically heated element 106 on the arm 98 then burns through the yarn or tape. Element 106 may be replaced by cutting means. The slot 68 leads to a chamber within the nose 70 of the spindle 46. In this chamber are a pair of grippers 64, 66 that are spring biassed apart and mounted on a piston 115. When the piston 115 is moved towards the slot 68 the grippers 64, 66 engage and slide over sloping surfaces of the nose 70 such that these grippers move towards each other to close on the yarn or tape in the slot 68. A fresh winding is then commenced. The various operations are achieved by what is known as 'cascade pneumatics' wherein the sequence of valve operation is achieved by intervalve signalling. Two-for-one twister. The supply package 2 is mounted on a bracket 4 that is pivotally mounted on stub axles 6 carrying two flyer discs 8 driven by a belt 11. Yarn or tape from the package 2 is led over a guide roller 12, a bar 14 and around pulleys 16 and 18 all of which are mounted on the bracket 4. Thereafter the yarn or tape passes through the hollow axle 6 at the left hand end of the twister as seen in Fig. 1. The yarn or tape emerges through a hole 20 in the side of the axle 6, passes through a slot 21 in the rim of the flyer disc towards the rim of the disc, through a slot in the right hand flyer disc and through a bore 26 in the right hand axle. Counting. The shaft 59 of the lower haul pulley 30 provides the input to an impulse switch housed in a gear box 60 so that a set of contact points will close every four revolutions of the shaft 59 to provide an impulse to the counter unit 62 which records the twine yardage. The shaft 59 also drives a synchronous generator 63 energising a signal detector (not shown). The counter 62 stops the twister when a predetermined number of yards of yarn has been wound. The haul pulley 30 will subsequently game to rest and when this happens the voltage signal from the generator 63 is no longer sent to the signal detector and this acts to cut off the current to the driving motor of the winding spindle 46. The following operations then occur (a) the counter 62 resets; (b) a counter 61 recording the number of packages doffed registers a count, and (c) a contact closes to start the pneumatic doffing sequence.
