Abstract

1432558 Controlling light DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 17 Oct 1973 [22 Sept 1972] 43894/72 Heading H4F A graticule in an optical system comprises a liquid crystal film between two parallel transparent plates each supporting an array of parallel electrodes, the arrays being inclined to each other. A cross is displayed when potential is applied to an electrode in each array. When the potential applied to both electrodes is of the same polarity the centre point remains clear. The graticule may be mounted in the image plane of the system or the cross is projected into this plane by a half silvered mirror. In the latter case the cross should be clear against a dark background, this is achieved using polarizing plates on either side of a liquid crystal which exhibits twisted nematic scattering. The display is erased by a h.f. signal.
