Abstract
1431895 Atomizing aluminium alloys and forming sintered articles ALCAN RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT Ltd 21 June 1973 [30 June 1972] 30876/72 Headings C7D and C7X Droplets 50-1 micron diameter formed by atomizing in N2, A or air a molten Al alloy containing 0.05-25 wt. per cent alloying constituents such as Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Zr, Nb are undercooled at least 50C and projected against a substrate while still molten to form alloy particles which are then compacted at 200-500C. The alloy may also contain up to 12% Si in addition to the alloying constituents e.g. Al - 6% Ni - 12% Si and the preferred alloy is near entectic composition. The molten alloy is delivered from a crucible 1 and atomized by N 2 at 80p.s.i. from twelve nozzles 3 surrounding the delivery pipe 2. A steel strip located 14 inches below the pipe outlet is moved at a rate so as to build a deposit of Al alloy 20 mms. thick. The diameter of the molten droplets is about 180 microns and the temperature drops from 850C by 300-360C before striking the steel strip which may be air or water cooled. The deposited alloy is then hot-rolled at 200- 500C preferably after stripping from the steel strip, and it may then be cold-rolled.
