1431780 Silicon nitride powder JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 18 Sept 1973 [6 Oct 1972] 46167/72 Heading C1A Silicon nitride powder is made by forming a bed of silicon powder in a furnace to which an atmosphere containing reactable nitrogen is supplied, locating a first thermo-couple in the furnace outside the bed and at least two further thermo-couples in the bed spaced apart from each other and from the first thermo-couple, supplying an atmosphere containing reactable nitrogen to the furnace and heating so that α- silicon nitride is formed, controlling the partial pressure of reactable nitrogen in the furnace in accordance with the difference between the temperature outside the bed measured by the first thermo-couple and the highest temperature measured by the further thermo-couples so as to ensure that the temperature throughout the bed does not exceed the value above which #- silicon nitride is formed, the partial pressure of reactable nitrogen in the furnace being controlled by either (a) diluting the reactable nitrogen in the furnace atmosphere, or (b) evacuating the furnace. The bed may contain a mixture of silicon powder and α-silicon nitride powder. When the temperature of the bed reaches a predetermined value, the supply of heat to the furnace may be reduced. Preferably the temperature in the bed does not exceed a value between 1150‹ and 1350‹ C.
