Abstract

1431683 Preparation of block polymers by polymer/polymer reaction BASF AG 9 Aug 1973 [10 Aug 1972] 37752/73 Heading C3P A process for preparing a block or graft copolymer of one or more polyalkylene oxide blocks A and one or more vinyl aromatic polymer and/or diene polymer blocks B comprises (a) polymerizing one or more vinyl aromatic and/or diene monomers in a non-polar hydrocarbon solvent to form a block B using an organolithium initiator, (b) adding one or more methyl methacrylate units to the chain ends of the living polymer block B in an amount of 0À5- 10 wt. per cent of block B, (c) separately preparing a polymer block A by homopolymerizing one or more alkylene oxides or block copolymerizing one or more alkylene oxides with one or more vinyl aromatic and/or diene monomers using an organo sodium or organo potassium initiator in an organic solvent and (d) adding block A to block B by reaction of at least one living alkali metal alcoholate end group of block A with at least one ester group of block B, with the elimination of alkali metal methoxide to produce an AB or ABA block polymer. In the examples the following polymers are prepared: (1) block B, polybutadiene using butyl lithium, and containing 11À1% 1,2 units; block A polyethylene oxide produced using α-methyl styrene dipotassium tetramer in THF; (2) block B, poly-(styrene/butadiene) using butyl lithium; block A, polyethylene oxide prepared as in (1); (3) block B, polystyrene using butyl lithium; block A, polyethylene oxide prepared as before; and (4) block B, polybutadiene using butyl lithium; block A, block polystyrene-polyethylene oxide polymer using cumyl potassium (for the polystyrene) and butyl lithium (for the polyethylene oxide).
