Abstract

1430845 Coiling wire GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 28 June 1973 [30 June 1972] 30772/ 73 Heading D1T A control system for depositing linear material in continuous layers into a rotating receiving means, each layer forming a coil approximating to an Archimedes spiral, with the spiral direction reversed on alternate layers, comprises means 100 for continuously producing a first signal proportional to the speed of the product, means 300 for establishing a spiral constant and for continuously producing a second signal proportional to the desired coil convolute radius as a function of said first signal and said spiral constant; means 200 for dividing the first signal by the second signal to produce a reel speed reference signal; and means 600 for controlling the angular motion of the reel 800 in response to said reel speed reference signal. Radii limits. The output of the radius generator 300 is connected to a detector 400 which detects the inner and outer radii limits and reverses the direction of radius change each time the inner and outer radii limits respectively are reached. A rheostat (301), Fig. 5b (not shown) is included in the radius generator and is used to establish the spiral constant. Torque Regulation. A torque programmer 500 sends a signal T to a torque regulator 700 regulating the torque on the reel 800. The signal T is proportional to the torque required to overcome inertia. The torque programmer 500 is also connected to an input from a device 1000 providing a signal proportional to the actual reel speed. Speed Control. The speed regulator 600 compares the reel speed reference signal 200 with the reel speed signal from the sensing device 1000. The resulting error signal is fed into a torque regulator 700 which modifies the torque as required to maintain an accurate speed of the reel 800. Rate Limit Reference. A rate limit reference 900, which limits the second derivative of the desired coil convolute radius with respect to time to produce a smooth response for reversal of the spiral constant is connected to a second input of the radius generator 300 and is further connected as a third input to torque regulator 700 to limit the torque rate. Thus, the torque regulator 700 regulates the torque on reel 800 in accordance with torque programmer 500, speed regulator 600 and rate limit reference 900. The circuit of Fig. 4 is particularly described with reference to Figs. 5a to 5d (not shown).
